History of American Legion Post 184 - Herndon, Virginia American Legion Post 184 was established based on a decision of The American Legion 17th District (Virginia) to establish a new post in the Herndon-Reston area. Herndon Moose Lodge #2274 Administrator Dennis Shea was contacted by District 17 to see if the new post could meet at the Moose Lodge. At the meeting of the Moose Board of Directors on January 17, 1989 it was decided the Legion could meet upstairs in the Moose Hall. The first recorded meeting was the 3rd Monday of March 1989. There is no record of an April meeting but some early members recall an advertisement in the Herndon Observer advising veterans that an American Legion post was being established. The first recorded minutes of a formal meeting were dated May 15, 1989. American Legion District 17 officers were present to get Post 184 up and running as a new post. The post charter membership requirement was met. First elected post officers were: Commander - Shane Miller, Adjutant - Nick Paone, Finance Officer - Jay Shaffer, Service Officer - Ray McClure, Sgt at Arms - John Kirk. Post 184 accepted its first Chaplain, Rex R. Roller at the June 19, 1989 meeting. Terrell Waters accepted the first permanent Post Commander Position.
Post 184 received its temporary charter from Dick Shreve, then District 17 Membership Chairman on July 17, 1989. John Kirk first suggested naming Post 184 after Wayne M. Kidwell, a Herndon native killed in action in Vietnam. On August 21, 1989, members present at that meeting approved naming Post 184 in honor of Wayne M. Kidwell. Learn more about Wayne M. Kidwell On June 18, 1990, then Post Commander Terrell Waters and members of Post 184 were presented with our permanent charter by District 17 Membership Chairman Dick Shreve and District Vice Commander Tom McGuire, two of the men District men directly involved in starting Post 184. The Charter was dated February 3, 1990. On the recommendation of The American Legion National, State and District Headquarters, Post 184 applied for and received incorporation papers on December 17, 1990. Incorporation of Post 184 was processed by Commander Waters and Adjutant Hickson. The Wayne M. Kidwell Post 184 has continued to grow and participate in American Legion programs to this day. |
